Update on the Cruising Association’s orca project

The phenomenon of orcas damaging small yachts and other vessels along the south and west coasts of Spain and Portugal began in 2020. It is linked with the migration of tuna exiting the Mediterranean from the Strait of Gibraltar and heading West and North around the Iberian Peninsula, into the Bay of Biscay, primarily between the months of June and October.

Cruising Association provides guidance on new Amsterdam vignette

A new scheme to reduce pollution and prevent overcrowding on the waterways of Amsterdam now requires most boats transiting the city to purchase a vignette.

Costing €40 and valid for three years, the charge applies to all Amsterdam waterways – including the Standing Mast Route used by hundreds of boats each year – with the exception of a few major waterways such as the Nordzeekanaal and Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal.

CAptain’s Mate of the Month – Sassnitz, Germany

For April’s CAptain’s Mate of the Month, we are heading to the popular Baltic cruising waters and dropping in on Sassnitz, Germany.

Located on the northeast of the island of Rügen, Germany’s largest island, Sassnitz offers a mix of charming old town, stunning nature and plenty of facilities. Shelter in the harbour is good, with a choice of pontoon and quay moorings.

Jimmy Cornell honoured with the Duchess of Kent Trophy

Renowned sailor Jimmy Cornell has been honoured by the Cruising Association with the presentation of the prestigious Duchess of Kent Trophy.

The Cruising Association may present the Duchess of Kent Trophy to any sailor, not necessarily a member, who has achieved something exceptional in or around small boats.

Orca Update

The work of the CA’s Regulatory & Technical Services group (RATS) orca project continues, with the ongoing collation of interaction and uneventful passage reports in order to help research possible solutions to the phenomenon of orca interactions along the Iberian Peninsula.

CAptain’s Mate of the Month – Antwerp, Belgium

For March’s CAptain’s Mate of the Month we head to Antwerp, where you will find an excellent choice of marinas and a wide range of mooring and facilities. The Willemdok is an attractive, environment-friendly marina in an inner basin with some 300 berths, with the Linkeroever marina, which is greener and quieter, on the left bank of the Scheldt opposite.
