Dramatic changes in the fortunes of ports from Yarmouth to Colchester occurred in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries as their communities faced repeated outbreaks of the Black Death, global climate change and a severe and prolonged economic depression. The result was a permanent shift in their importance and standing.

Professor Bailey is the president of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History. He is an historian and he played rugby for England in the 1980s.
