CA Facebook Focus 2018

And the winners are...!

We were delighted to receive over 60 Facebook Focus images fitting our entry criteria over the course of 12 weeks. These were gradually whittled down as we took to Facebook to announce a 'Shot of the Week’ or, in some cases where we have been spoiled for choice, to two or more 'Shots of the Week’. All shortlisted images were then allocated to an online album for the judging panel to select their favourite image in each of the four categories.

VHF Radio Checks - who should you call

The Cruising Association’s RATS (Regulations and Technical Services) Committee has been in discussion with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) about the use of calls to HMCG on Channel 16 requesting radio checks. RATS have anecdotal evidence of a proliferation of such requests and that these seemed to have spread from the Solent to other areas and Falmouth in particular.

The General Lighthouse Authorities of the UK and Ireland are conducting a survey to gauge current and future user requirements for their Differential GPS service.

The General Lighthouse Authorities of the UK and Ireland—Trinity House, the Northern Lighthouse Board and the Commissioners of Irish Lights—operate 14 Differential GPS reference stations which provide corrections to GPS, thereby enabling greater positional accuracy and integrity in the user’s position.

Golden Globe 50th Anniversary Celebration Facebook Competition

In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race 2018 and the CA’s involvement with and support for its Patron Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, we are giving away two copies of Peter Nichols’ sailing classic A Voyage for Madmen, a book, published by Profile Books, detailing the extraordinary story behind the inaugural Golden Globe round-the-world sailing race of 1968, a Race which was won by Sir Robin, the first man to sail solo non-stop around the world and arrive back in Falmouth 10 months later on 22nd April 1969.

Failure of throw bag rescue line

RATS draws the attention of Members to this important MAIB report, attached below. and for them to consider the points in it if they have these or other throw bags.

RATS adds the concern of two of its Members about the need to check the integrity of ropes and halyards on craft and their degradation caused by exposure to the UV content of sunlight.

 

Cancellation of London Boat Show

The Cruising Association responds to the demise of the London Boat Show

British Marine, the owners and organisers of the London Boat Show (LBS), yesterday (15 May) announced that the 2019 Show, due to run at ExCeL London from 9-13 January 2019, will now not take place.

The decision was made after independent research showed there was insufficient support from a large proportion of the marine industry to the London Boat Show with its current format, duration and location.
