Nicci Pugh; A British Hospital Ship at War. Nicci, a local sailor, who has lived and worked in Cornwall all her life is an ex-RCYC member now RNSA, who learnt to sail on the Helford before her time in the Navy as a Nursing Sister. Nicci will base the talk on her book ‘White Ship – Red Crosses’, which is a fascinating, comprehensive account of the work of the medical teams and crew aboard the British Hospital Ship SS Uganda during the Falklands War in 1982, Uganda was moored in the Fal near Smugglers after the hostilities.

Andrew Eccleston; a lecturer in Nautical Studies at Plymouth University, where he
teaches meteorology and navigation, Andrew has been consultant on meteorology
to ocean races and watch leader on the recent circumnavigation of Gypsy Moth
1V, he will give an illustrated talk of his time on three legs of the second
circumnavigation of Gypsy Moth 1V.

David Keogh; HMS Edinburgh; Raising Stalins Gold. In 1942 HMS Edinburgh was Convoy Commander on the return passage from Murmansk to the UK and was carrying 5 Tons of Soviet Gold on route to America.

Nicci, a veteran Naval Nursing Sister will base the talk on her book ‘White Ship – Red Crosses’, which is a fascinating, comprehensive account of the work of the medical teams and crew aboard the British Hospital Ship SS Uganda during the Falklands War in 1982. Included will be the hasty transformation of the ship from a cruise liner at Devonport Docks as well as maps and many unseen photos.

Royal Cornwall YC, Wednesday  April 13th 2011; Jill Trew, Pink Granite and Hanseatic Splender, Jill and Frank with Den Njord have spent four seasons in the western Baltic, most recently they cruised the beautiful Boshaslan coast of Sweden, then visited the Danish island of Bornholm, followed by the Baltic coast of Germany with its Hanseatic towns and inland seas and islands. A memorable summer!

Seminar:Cutting the Risks of Cruising

The Cruising Association’s South West Section is hosting this seminar for sailors in the south west who are dreaming, planning or enjoying offshore cruising. We hope that a mix of inshore and offshore, motor cruising and rags and sticks sailors will find the day informative and interesting for extending their current cruising comfort zones. The speakers will include; Andrew Ecclestone, Weather Watching, Martin Bidmead MRCC; Keith Boswell RNLI; Sue Thatcher, Nurse and Medic on the Challange yachts, First Aid and Medical Emergencies at Sea.

This evening will be different, this is ocean cruising followed by two seasons enjoying holiday brochure islands in the Caribbean then, on the way back to the UK from the Azores, he will tell us about what all offshore sailors prepare for but hope will never happen!

Royal Western YC, Wednesday January 19th 2011; Joe Lovelady, Admiralty Pilot. Why do we have Admiralty Pilots as well as the commercial ones in the precincts of Plymouth Sound? Joe will explain this and all the work covered by the Admiralty Pilots and illustrates his talk with pictures including showing us all the variety of ships that belong to Her Majesties Royal Navy.
