For December, La Linea in Spain is our chosen CAptain’s Mate of the Month location.
Located just a short walk from the Gibraltar border, Alcaidesa Marina at La Linea is a popular choice for those visiting Gibraltar. The marina is favoured by many for overwintering and for the convenience of catching flights from Gibraltar Airport.
Alcaidesa Marina offers good shelter with very little surge even in strong winds out in the bay, and a selection of moorings on finger pontoons. La Linea is a port of entry and CA members can find full details on the port protocol under the CAptain’s Mate location 'info' tab.
This year, CA member Nigel Langhorn enjoyed an extended stay at Alcaidesa Marina, and shares his experience of the location and the protocols for transiting between Spain and Gibraltar. He describes the marina as, "A great place to stop either entering or leaving the Mediterranean. We stayed here for 2 months after a trans-Atlantic crossing to give us time to return home to the UK. The marina is very welcoming and competitively priced. Very good facilities and close proximity to numerous restaurants. A 5-minute taxi ride to a very large Carrefour supermarket which the marina will arrange."
On the protocols to transit between Spain and Gibraltar, Nigel adds, "Very handy for Gibraltar airport for returning to the UK. However, please be aware that you need to go to the main customs and immigration office to be stamped out before crossing at the border if you intend to fly from Gibraltar airport. Also if you arrive at Gibraltar airport from the UK you will need documentary proof that your boat is at Alcaidesa Marina to show Spanish customs and immigration. This should be obtained from the marina office before leaving."
Nigel also recommends exploring Gibraltar’s rich history, sharing that, "Gibraltar is a good place to visit to understand it's incredible history. The Moorish Castle, Great Siege battery and WW2 tunnels well worth a visit."
