For October’s CAptain’s Mate of the Month, we take you to Saltstone anchorage, a serene spot near Salcombe on the southwest coast of the UK. While Salcombe is a well-known and beautiful destination, it can get busy, especially during peak season.
If you are looking for a quieter alternative, venture a little further upstream into the Kingsbridge Estuary, where you’ll find Saltstone at the entrance to Frogmore Creek. The anchorage offers good holding in sandy mud and is well sheltered.
CA member Malcolm Howe visited in June this year and described Saltstone as "a charming and peaceful place, away from the noise and bustle of the moorings further downstream. Very little passing traffic apart from the occasional ferry to Kingsbridge."
Sharing tips on approach and anchoring, Malcolm notes in his CAptain’s Mate report, "There is a shallow patch as you pass north of the green Saltstone lateral mark post that deeper draft vessels will need to be mindful of around low water. But once past this, you will be back into deep water. We dropped in 4.5 m around half tide."
In summer 2024, the trip back to Salcombe by dinghy takes about 15 minutes, or you can take the water taxi. The overnight anchoring fee was a reasonable £12 for a 12m boat.
Members can head to CAptain’s Mate to discover more about Saltstone, along with several nearby locations around Salcombe. You can also find details of the CA’s Honorary Local Representative for the area.
