The Isles of Scilly are a favourite cruising destination for many. The isles offer a stunning archipelago with a mild climate, rich wildlife, and a unique island experience just off the coast of Cornwall, England.
Porth Cressa, located on the southern side of Hugh Town, the capital of St Mary’s, provides an excellent alternative anchorage to St Mary's Pool when northerly winds prevail. It offers easy access to Hugh Town and space to anchor around twenty yachts.
CAptain’s Mate gives information on the approach to Porth Cressa along with anchoring advice.
CA member James Graham-White visited in June this year, and submitted a report to the app saying, "Good holding in sand. Rocks and submerged cables on eastern side.
"Protected from N and E. Exposed to S. In westerlies the swell wraps round up into the anchorage causing a southerly swell and making it very rolly. The deeper your draft the more exposed you'll be further out in the anchorage.
"Shallow, tidal, sandy beach to land the dinghy close to town. Consider leaving the outboard and rowing ashore to avoid the weed and make the dinghy lighter to haul up and down the beach with the tide."
If you are planning a trip to the Isles of Scilly, CAptain’s Mate offers a wealth of information from members’ reports. In addition to Porth Cressa, you will find detailed reports on St Martin’s, St Mary’s Pool, Old Grimsby Harbour and Samson. Other featured locations include Great Porth, St Agnes, St Helen’s Pool and Bread and Cheese Cove – to name just a few! Members also have access to general information on visiting the Isles of Scilly.
