Crossing Biscay Webinar

Date:
Tue, 12/04/2022 - 18:45

The Bay of Biscay has a reputation for storms, swell and challenging conditions. The alternative is an extensive cruise along the Atlantic Coasts of France and Spain. UK nationals are limited to remaining for 90 days within a rolling period of 180 days within Schengen territory. Thus, a direct crossing from the UK or France has its attractions.

Beginning In Biscay - Cruising the Atlantic Coast of France

Date:
Sat, 12/12/2020 - 14:30 to 17:00

Although the Bay of Biscay has reputation for storms and dangerous seas, the Atlantic Coast of France is one of Europe's best cruising grounds. Fortunately, from Spring to Autumn the weather is much kinder - warmer than the UK but not as hot as the Mediterranean. Why is it, that so many boaters, who visit this cruising ground, decide to stay and make this their cruising base?  What are its main attractions, is it the scenery, the cuisine or the French way of life?

This year the Biscay Section returns to Port Joinville on the Ile d'Yeu for their summer Rally. The Ile d'Yeu is one of the most attractive islands on the French Biscay coast. It is far enough away from the mainland to retain its unique atmosphere, and small enough to explore by foot or bicycle within a few days.  We hope to arrange a meal at our favourite restaurant 09 as part of the rally events. Space may be limited, so early booking is essential.

Sat, 21/03/2020 - 10:00 to 17:00

Following the revised advice issued by the Government on 16 March this event has been cancelled.

A Biscay Crossing should always be given respect and careful planning. For many of us, it will be our first passage lasting more than 25 hours and for some as long as three days. What are the best port of departure and arrival? How do we make the best use of weather information and how will that influence the proposed route. What about looking after the crew, watch-keeping? What are the limits of your comfort zone?

We cannot guarantee that every crossing will be benign, but there are now more sources of information that may help to find a better weather slot.
