It might be said that there is nothing unusual about an Atlantic passage, but the trip does have some interesting features. For example, my wife, Tania, suffers from an inner ear disorder which makes sailing very difficult for her (it causes continuous sea-sickness). Also, for various reasons I had to sail very much to a timetable with flights home and crew changes for each leg of the trip.

With the challenges of COVID-19 still likely to curtail face-to-face events being staged in the first few months of 2021, the Cruising Association (CA) is putting in place plans to stage an online Spring Promotions Week to coincide with the fitting out season, from 22-26 March.

Background

HMRC has caused controversy amongst the many thousands of British yacht and motorboat owners that keep their boats in EU countries by introducing a penal interpretation into UK tax law requiring them to pay VAT a second time on the value of their boats when they bring them into UK waters.

Brexit: VAT on boats outside the UK – Urgent Update

Boats in EU may have to pay UK VAT on return

The CA understands that HMRC may be considering changing the interpretation of VAT rules so that, after the Brexit transition period, all boat owners established in the UK whose boats have been in the EU for the last three years or longer will pay VAT for a second time if they want to bring their boats back to the UK.
