CAptain’s Mate of the Month – Preko, Croatia

Hot off the press with the news that CAptain’s Mate has won the ‘Equipment Innovation of the Year’ at the British Yachting Awards, we head to one of the locations added to the app early on in its evolution.

Preko in Croatia has been on CAptain’s Mate since 2012 and is a popular destination for CA members, with plenty of informative reports to help you discover all you need to know about this delightful town. Located on the island of Ugljan, directly opposite Zadar on the mainland, Preko offers a sheltered marina with around 80 berths and anchoring, alongside plenty of shoreside facilities and a fast ferry to Zadar.

CA member Stuart Bradley was one of the most recent visitors this season and shares his insights:

"This is one of the few marinas in Croatia that has a washing machine and a tumble dryer for use by clients, rather than a laundry service. It does not have a pump-out station although some sources claim it does.

"All the friendly and helpful staff have been in post since the marina opened in 2008 and can either provide the services you need on your boat or reliably recommend others. Marina Preko is located in the centre of the town, near all restaurants, shops, the marketplace, surgery, pharmacy, and post office.

"The marina is about a 15 min walk to/from the Preko ferry terminal. For travel between Zadar airport and Preko, the large ferry to/from Gaženica is more convenient with a shorter journey time by taxi. Alternatively, a bus meets the ferry at Gaženica and goes to the central bus station from where a second bus travels to the airport.

"The 15th century Fransiscan Monastery on Galevac Island, and onetime home of Italian nobles, presents an interesting visit with the gardens described as 'Eden gone wild'. On a clear day the walk up to Saint Michael's Mount and the 13th century Venetian Fort offers wonderful views across the islands to seaward and to the Velebit Mountains in the East."
