This month we head to Canada with CAptain’s Mate and the remote port town of Lewisporte on the northeast coast of Newfoundland.
CA member Martin Fuller has been cruising in the region and visited Lewisporte earlier this year, where he also had his yacht ‘Sandpiper’ hauled out.
Located in Notre Dame Bay, Lewisporte has deep-water bays, an abundance of islands, the largest marina in Atlantic Canada and a fantastically welcoming yacht club. The town’s port opens to the wonderfully named Bay of Exploits.
"An extremely friendly marina with plenty of room for visitors and an excellent location to over-winter; with the mast up. The bay does occasionally freeze up to the marina but is usually clear to the open sea by early to late May.
Marina. Easy and clear approach and access, minor hazard in 2022 of old pontoon at end of breakwater but end marked by Red (Starboard) light. Minimum 8ft at pontoons and 5ft at low water at fuel berth (8ft at high water). 20-ton travel lift available; yachts over 43ft may have to remove forestay for lift out. Sheltered over winter location means masts can stay up and there is good year-round security at the yard. Pontoons have fuel and water (20amp) adaptors can be bought at the local chandlery at entrance to marina.
Ashore. The marina is host to the Lewisporte Yacht club with very good laundry, showers, toilets and clubhouse open to all visitors. A wide range of shops including 2 food supermarkets, 4 hardware stores and mechanics garages, close by. The local chandlery is located at the entrance to the marina and carries a limited stock but can order most items for delivery within 4-7 days. There is a good café at the entrance to the marina and a well-stocked hardware store 100m from the marina gates. The Brittany Inn Hotel has a good restaurant and there is a good range of fast-food outlets at the far end of the town – approximately 2.5 kms from marina. Diesel and petrol are available at the marina."
Martin’s report continues with information on local supermarkets, transport and key contact numbers.
