CA member Nick Nottingham shares his report on visiting the stunning Turks and Caicos Islands, an archipelago of over forty low-lying coral islands southeast of the Bahamas in the Atlantic.
For October, CAptain’s Mate of the Month heads to South Dock on Grand Turk, the capital island of the Turks and Caicos, and we share extracts from Nick who reports on where to anchor from his visit in March 2022:
"There are two options really - go in behind the reef opposite the town centre of Cockburn (north of the airport) and anchor in 3-4m of sand, or head south to the cruise terminal (south of the airport).
The northern anchorage is subject to swell if there is too much north in the wind. There are broken piers but no dinghy landing; just go up the beach ashore. Once there, there are tourist shops, the odd restaurant (try Barbies for wifi) and a shopping mall.
The south anchorage at Governor's beach may be a better option overnight. You anchor north of the ruined jetty; anchoring near the new jetty, in the mooring field or near the cruise liner terminal appears to be prohibited. The place is surreal - either heaving with tourists from the cruise ships, or absolutely deserted and shut up when they have gone. There are many shops and duty free outlets set up for the cruise liner tourists. You can get free wifi here and the beach is pleasant and easy to land on."
Crystal turquoise waters and white sand beaches are trademarks of the Turks and Caicos and the CAptain’s Mate ‘overview tab’ describes Grand Turk as ‘a place of faded elegance, a mixture of once-good-looking buildings of some historical interest’. The ‘info tab’ shares information on arrival formalities, gas, fuel, wifi, as well as restaurant and local info tips. You can view nuggets of information from members via the ‘reports tab’.
