Planning a Long Distance Cruise? Register Now for Our Long Distance Sailing Seminar

Saturday 18th August 2012, 09.30 - 17.00

Organised by the Blue Water Section, this will be a full day seminar held at CA House with a range of quality speakers and a programme dealing with topics of interest to both those at the planning stage and cruisers currently sailing in locations where ‘home’ is only reached by airplane.

Plenty of time has been allowed for discussion at the end of each presentation and further informal discussion will be possible with speakers, after their presentation. The library will be open and available during and after the seminar.

 

TOPICS AND SPEAKERS INCLUDE:

  • Mid Ocean-Things That Could Spoil Your Day by Vyv Cox

A frequent technical contributor to Yachting Monthly and PBO who will advise on inspection and hopefully avoidance.     

  • Power on Board by Matt Boney

After his recently written article on the subject for long distance cruisers, Matt Boney will be talking about generation, storage, conservation and monitoring of power.

  •  Staying in Touch by Ed Wildgoose 

Presented by Ed Wildgoose of Mailasail, who provides satellite and wifi communications equipment, services and expertise

  • Victualling and Food Care by Sandy Duker

BW secretary who has been sailing long distance for 17 years and has well over 100,000 sea miles behind her will talk about care, keeping and cooking food for long passages.

  • Grenada - A Yachting Destination by Sharon Bernstein

A brief talk from the Grenada Tourism Board on the benefits of Grenada as the location to leave your boat safely whilst you return home or travel elsewhere.

  •  Fuel Care-Biocides and Bugs by Tony Warr

Presented by BW member, Tony Warr, who in a previous life ran a business supplying diesel biocides to airlines and fleet vehicle operators.

  • Yacht Preparation and Equipment by Michael Hartshorn

For long distance sailing, to be presented by Michael Hartshorn, a BW member currently sailing in N. America for the second season.

  • MyCA and Captain’s mate by Ivan Andrews

A talk by the CA’s very own IT guru, Ivan Andrews, who will talk about the continuing developments and use by members of the  CAptain's mate phone app and the CA website to aid in planning.

  • Managing Medical Matters on Board by Dr Bernie Smallman

A regular speaker at the Medsec seminars, Dr Smallman will be dealing with the problems of resolving medical issues on board when you may be several days away from professional help.

The cost for the seminar is £18 for members and £45 for non members and includes tea, coffee and biscuits during the day and a buffet lunch.

For those wishing to stay on for supper or just a chat, the bar will be open after the seminar. Limited car parking is available and overnight cabin accommodation is currently available for members.

Non members joining the Cruising Association on the day will benefit from a £25 reduction on their membership fees per household membership.

The annual Blue Water lunch at CA House for Blue Water section sailors and friends to meet up for an exchange of information/ideas/anchorages-good & bad; swap stories and enjoy an afternoon with like-minded people.

This year we will have a talk after lunch for the first time and we are delighted to welcome Sam and Alex Fortescue who will tell us about their year out to undertake an Atlantic Circuit on their Sadler 34 Summer Song, visiting the Caribbean and North America before returning to Britain.

The bar will be open from 12:00 and  lunch will be available from 13.00.
