The location overview on CAptain’s Mate describes Les Iles de Glénan as a picturesque archipelago that has the only coral beach in Europe. Well sheltered in summer, there are shallows and rocks between some of the islands of which only St Nicolas has public access. There are no facilities apart from the restaurants, and therein lies its charms. CAptain’s Mate also gives advice on approaches, anchor holding and landing.
We head to the location report of CA member Michael Lithgow, who visited Penfret in June this year. Michael shares, "I avoided St Nicolas as it was packed with boats and part of the pleasure of coming out to the Islands is the peace and quiet. I had two nights off the West side of Ile de Penfret - opposite the Sailing School. I dropped anchor Southwest of Ile de Penfret.
"The pilotage books describe the stream as running hard - and it does - although I was here at springs. I entered from the north as recommended and having checked heights of tides had no problem finding good holding.
"The second night I anchored off the north-west of Penfret. This is a much better location and dropped anchor in 2.5m of water at LAT. Current less strong - although still present. Water is crystal clear and whilst still a little cold in June it was refreshing to swim. You need relatively calm weather as the anchorages are exposed. But well worth the visit."
There are also mooring buoys available, details of which are shared in other reports.
There are numerous other locations near to Les Iles de Glénan which you can discover on CAptain’s Mate.
If you are based on the mainland, there are also plenty of ferry options to Les Iles de Glénan from various locations.
