For June's CAptain’s Mate of the Month, we head to the south of Malta, which like the rest of the island has an abundance of stunning coves and bays.
Il-Hofra I-Kbira is a beautiful bay with stunningly clear water, where you can drop anchor in about eight metres of water. There are no facilities, which adds to the tranquility of the location.
CA member Paul Simmons describes Il-Hofra I-Kbira as a 'delightful anchorage open to the south-east.'
Paul visited in April 2023 and whilst highly recommending a visit to Il-Hofra I-Kbira does note, "As with most anchorages in Malta, it is very busy at the weekend and thins out on Sunday evening."
So, if you want to enjoy own onboard company in a stunning spot, it may be best to drop anchor during weekdays.
Paul’s report on CAptain’s Mate, continues, "If the weather is with you its great shelter in a unique setting, unless there's a southerly swell. The caves and cliffs are worth exploring as are the many nearby swimming areas frequented by the locals. There are no landing areas for your dinghy and effectively no facilities for boaters, so you have to be self-sufficient.
"Marxalokk Bay further SW is a nice traditional place, but anchoring is better (easier and more space) in St Georges Bay, next bay to the West. Here you can re-provision and drop people at the airport and get buses etc to anywhere on the island. It's a short walk back to Marsaxlokk."
Marsaxlokk is the epitome of traditional Mediterranean island life, so well worth a visit too.
Members visiting Malta can also receive support from the CA Honorary Local Representative (HLR) based on the island. HLRs provide support for things like emergency repairs, mooring arrangements, securing visas, translations, guidance on local customs and bureaucracy, provisioning, land transport and excursions. And if the HLR can't help, they will know someone who can.
As well as Il-Hofra I-Kbira, CA members can discover plenty of other locations in Malta and around the world using CAptain’s Mate, either through the mobile version or via the web.
Thanks to our members, over 170 new locations spanning 29 countries have been added to CAptain’s Mate so far in 2024.
