For April’s CAptain’s Mate of the Month we visit St Helier, the capital of Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands in the English Channel.
The marina and port offer good shelter and are close to all the facilities of the town of St Helier. Access to the marina is restricted by a tidal sill, but there is a large deep water waiting area.
CA member Brett Charlton describes St Helier as a "great cruising destination" and shares a comprehensive report including plenty of top tips on exploring the island, saying:
"The public transport infrastructure is very efficient and you can get around the island very easily by bus.
"St Aubin is both picturesque and offers a plethora of good cafes and restaurants. From local seafood to Thai.
"Corbiere lighthouse is dramatic. It has featured in numerous films. If you walk out to it don’t underestimate the speed the incoming tide covers the causeway.
"Devil’s Hole is another good day out. Some buses drop right by the start of this cliff top path. There is a pub very close to the bus stop.
"Gorey is a drying harbour overlooked by a spectacular castle.
"Finally, buses to the airport are fast and frequent."
CA members can take a read of Brett’s full report along with information shared by other members on St Helier, including details on approach and berthing, along with local facilities and amenities. Members can also discover plenty of other locations in Jersey and beyond on CAptain’s Mate appor web version.
Visiting members can receive assistance from the CA Honorary Local Representative (HLR) based in Jersey. HLRs provide support for things like emergency repairs, mooring arrangements, securing visas, translations, guidance on local customs and bureaucracy, provisioning, land transport and excursions. And if the HLR can't help, they will know someone who can.
