If you're considering cruising paired with a city break, Caorle, just an hour’s drive from Venice, is an excellent choice.
Located between Venice and Trieste and nestled between the estuaries of the Livenza and Lemene rivers, Caorle offers a picturesque setting.
In the spotlight for February's CAptain's Mate of the Month is Caorle Marina. We team up with Stuart Bradley, a long-standing member and former President (2009-2012), whose motor boat is based in the Adriatic. Stuart has visited both marinas at Caorle, each of which are detailed on CAptain's Mate, and for this feature our focus is on Caorle Marina.
A peaceful location with 480 berths, the well-appointed Caorle Marina is surrounded by residential apartments. Caorle is vibrant all year round, and particularly lively as a summer resort, with plenty of restaurants, shops and bars and an enchanting old town.
Stuart opens his CAptain’s Mate report on location advice, saying, "This is a more convenient harbour if you are planning to visit the scenic Caorle old town. It is also a more relaxing and prettier environment than Marina Quattro on the South side of the River Livenza.
"There has been a lot of development since we previously visited in 2009 and further apartment blocks within the marina are planned. On our last visit (on a Sunday) there were no staff available. However, there are alongside berths in the main channel for arriving boats to tie up and wait."
Stuart adds, "Caorle is a busy tourist destination so there are many restaurants, shops, ice cream parlours and other facilities. There are no charter fleets based here and the atmosphere is reminiscent of an English yacht club harbour."
Transport to Venice is either by car or there is a convenient direct bus service, which also stops at Venice airport. Train options are available from the nearby town of Portogruaro, to which there is a bus from Caorle.
Head to CAptain’s Mate for more insights on Caorle Marina. You will also find further information on the approach to the marina, berthing, onsite facilities including water, shore power, showers/toilets, fuel, laundry and bicycle hire, along with nearby amenities. You can also overwinter at the marina, either undercover or in the open.
