For August’s journey of discovery to one of the 6,500+ locations on CAptain’s Mate app, we head to Cala Gavetta on the island of La Maddalena, part of the Maddalena archipelago in the province of Sassari, northern Sardinia, Italy.
Located in the Strait of Bonifacio off the Costa Smeralda, between Corsica, France and Sardinia, Italy, the archipelago consists of seven large islands and 55 tiny islets. Holding national park status, the archipelago is a place of turquoise lagoons, deserted islands and pristine beaches, many accessible only by boat.
Relatively untouched by tourism, La Maddalena is the main island and CA Member Janice Smart shares her verdict on the harbour of Cala Gavetta, also known as La Maddalena Marina, as ‘not to be missed’ after she visited in May this year.
"The main road running through La Maddalena is just 2 metres from the harbour wall making the mooring busy & noisy during the daytime, quietening down around 7-8 in the evening.
Following our email to reserve a berth, we telephoned after the office opened at 0930 as instructed and confirmed a place. We were met on approach after calling on CH 74 & helped into a berth by the two ormeggiatori, stern-to against the high dock wall.
A comfortable place with all shops, restaurants etc. that you’d expect of a busy touristy town. We exchanged a gas bottle, had a haircut & enjoyed a nice hike across the island to Cala Trinita (14kms return).
Paid 27.50€/night including water & electricity for our 12m sailing yacht mid-May 2022. Brilliant showers a short walk round the harbour 3€ token operated & 1.50€ for the toilet. Laundry machines in the same building.
Local wine available from the barrel 3.90€/litre from the Mercato Civico & fabulous gelato from ‘La Finestrella’ on the seafront."
