A visit to Tower Bridge and Trinity House

A tour of the bridge and its workings with our own guide. Travelling the walkways with the new glass floor and the Edwardian Engine Room. This will be followed by lunch in the Minories.

Tower Bridge was started in 1886 and took 8 years to build and was officially opened on 30th June 1984. In total the project took some 18 years, with the first 8 years spent on the design. When it was built, Tower Bridge was the largest and most sophisticated bascule bridge ever completed. The bascules were operated by hydraulics, using steam to power the enormous pumping engines. In the first year of operation the bascules of the bridge were raised 6,160 times and witnessed the daily crossing of 8,000 horse-drawn vehicles and 60,000 pedestrians.

We will tour the bridge and its workings with our own guide travelling the walkways with the new glass floor and the Edwardian Engine Room. This to be followed by a “pub Lunch” in the Minories.

Our day finishes with a tour of Trinity House at Tower Hill which is both a wonderful building to see and explore. Trinity House has been serving the mariner ever since Henry Vlll granted it a Royal Charter on 20th May, 1514.

The day is expected to cost £18.55 each plus the pub lunch say £15.00. The Tower Bridge tour starts at 1100 and I suggest that we all meet at 1045. Trinity House 1530.
