Channel Section Seminar Saturday 27 February CA House

This all day seminar covers topics for people contemplating a cross-channel trip. There will be talks on weather information, man overboard, coastguard search and rescue, and crossing the channel for the first time.

11.00  Welcome

11.10 First time crossing the Channel. James Porter

James, originally from Guernsey is a freelance skipper and RYA Yachtmaster/Instructor has led sailing expeditions and taught skipper courses. James will talk about the planning, crew, tides, TSS, watch systems. This will be useful for anyone contemplating their first cross-channel trip.

11.50  Weather Information for Cruise Planning. Dr. Andrew Eccleston FRMS

 Andrew Eccleston is a Chartered Meteorologist who has worked in the weather business for 20 years. He is also an RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Instructor and sails a Dufour 36 from Plymouth. He will describe a real voyage from Plymouth to South Brittany and back, showing the sources of weather data used and how this influenced decisions on the trip.

14.00 Man Overboard. Julian Dussek

An analysis and conclusions from the popular MOB seminar held in November 2015. Five key speakers covered the scenario of a couple sailing and the skipper going overboard leaving the mate to effect a recovery.

14.45 Coastguard search and rescue services  Jeremy Littlewood

 Search and rescue framework and Dover Strait crossings: channel navigation information service. Jeremy worked for HM Coastguard up until June as a Watch Manager at Thames Coastguard and now as a Senior Coastal Operations Officer covering East Anglia.

15.30  Tea

16.00  Accessing Information  David Lovejoy

Weather forecasts, up to date cruising information, finding sources of support make a difference. David will look at the technology and some of the information now available.

CA members £30 or £55 per couple   Non-Members £45

You do not have to be a CA member to attend this seminar. Non-Members joining the CA on the day with a direct debit will receive the difference in the attendance costs.
