Accessing and Using Weather Information for Cruise Planning
Dr Andrew Eccleston is Chartered Meteorologist and Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society. He worked in the weather business for about 20 years, providing forecast services to media and aviation. He recently retired from an academic post at Plymouth University.
His talk is entitled “Accessing and Using Weather Information for Cruise Planning” which will describe a real voyage from Plymouth to S. Brittany and back, showing all the sources of weather data used and a discussion of how this influenced the decisions made on the trip. This should be useful for anyone contemplating their first cross-channel trip, but will also include information of interest to those who have been sailing for many years and are looking to extend their knowledge.
Andrew is an RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore and Shore-based Instructor. He sails a Dufour 36 from Plymouth and amongst his other sea-going experiences he was the ‘Official Meteorologist’ and 1st Mate for the 2006-7 project that sailed Sir Francis Chichester’s ‘Gipsy Moth IV’ round the world again.
