Islands of the Medway Estuary, Adam Taylor

Our speaker, Adam, is a keen canoeist with 15 years’ experience of paddling a fourteen foot, Canadian (open) canoe around the Medway estuary and its islands in addition to paddling adventures in Finland, Sweden and Canada. Using animations, census records, photos, Victorian plans, personal experience, and several trips to the National Archives, Adam’s presentation illustrates who lived on these islands, how the twin forts of Hoo and Darnet were constructed, why a pub was built on a remote island, how a WW1 German submarine ended up where it is now, the history of the infamous Deadman’s Island and a lot more.
