Jules Dussek becomes Secretary of the European Inland Waterways Section

Former CA President, Jules Dussek, has become the new Secretary for the CA’s European Inland Waterways Section (EIWS).

After many years of dedicated contribution as EIWS Secretaries, Betsan and Neil Caldwell have handed over the helm, with Jules taking up the post from 1 November. The CA is exceptionally grateful for Betsan and Neil’s significant and longstanding contribution to promote the EIWS and support members’ cruising.

"I am sure that I am speaking for all EIWS members in thanking Betsan and Neil for their unstinting Secretaryship of the Section,”"said Jules. "Both Covid and leaving the European Union have been additional challenges in addition to the normal responsibilities."

Looking ahead to the 2023 season, Jules continued, "I’m hoping that there will be enough water in some of the European inland waterways to enable us to cruise at all next year, but in the meantime, I have booked the lecture theatre at Limehouse for a meeting of the Section on Saturday 4 March 2022. The exact format has yet to be decided, as has the content of the day’s talks."

About the European Inland Waterways Section

The EIWS caters for those cruising the almost 30,000 km of European navigable rivers and canals. Did you know that by comparison a round-the-world voyage is typically a little over 40,000 km! This makes it a great cruising area both for newcomers to boating and for seasoned sailors seeking more tranquil waters - and of course those taking a short cut to or from the Mediterranean.

There are busy waterways and quiet ones, with great views in rural areas and opportunities to stay in the centre of towns and cities. The CA has a wide range of cruising guides, information sheets, layup information, seminars, newsletters and other resources provided to EIWS members, including CAptain's Mate, which provides cruising reports and frequent updates by members on mooring locations throughout the inland waterways.

Members also exchange information and cruising advice via the Section forum which is an especially valuable resource for cruisers new to the inland waterways.

Discover Cruising Sections

Sections are local CA member groups, and we offer two types: Cruising Sections and local UK Sections. Cruising Sections cover popular areas like the English Channel, Biscay, the Mediterranean or European inland waterways. Local Sections service different geographic regions of the UK, both in and out of the sailing season. There’s also an Antipodean Section for members living in Australia and New Zealand who sail in Europe during northern hemisphere summers and arrange get-togethers Down Under in their summer.

Sections run events like rallies, social get-togethers, seminars and lectures throughout the year as well as contributing information to our cruising database and publications. They are a great way to meet and make friends with people who live or sail near you, and to pick up boat loads of local knowledge.
