CAptain’s Mate of the Month – Christiansø, Denmark

Christiansø in Denmark is an unforgettable location for many CA members, and described as a 'gem with a fascinating history'. A fortified rock in the 'middle of nowhere' (or 12 miles from Bornholm), this nature reserve offers a wild, remote charm.

It is a popular spot among cruisers, so planning is essential. The CAptain’s Mate overview information recommends calling ahead to check availability, as the harbour can fill quickly. A black ball means the harbour is full. Dogs are allowed but restricted to the lower east quayside.

The approach from the south is straightforward, with the island’s strong lighthouse as the only guiding light. The harbour provides good protection from all directions, except winds directly from the south or the north winds. Visitor berths include alongside the quay and bow-on buoys.

CA member, Sam Steele, shares, "On Fridays at 11am, there is a tour of the island in English, which is invaluable to appreciate the grim history of this remarkable island. The tour is given by one of the permanent 96 residents.

"There is a supply vessel that comes in regularly, mooring on the quay south of the bridge, so it is prudent if you are in a larger boat to call the HM in advance. We were here in early June and there was plenty of space. The fee for our 13m yacht was DKK270."

Sam, who amongst her volunteer roles with the CA co-ordinates the CAptain’s Mate editors, describes Christiansø as "so very different to any other location in the Baltic" and places it in her "top 5 Baltic harbours".
