2021 Log Competition reflects the joy of Cruising

Every year, the CA welcomes entries from members to our Log Competition for cruises in the most recent season.

The 2021 Log Competition, which invites narratives of cruises in written video and photographic form, were again a stunning reflection of adventures on the water, with entries covering inland, coastal and offshore cruising.

"We are grateful to our many members who are so passionate about recording and sharing their cruises and entering them to our annual Log Competition," commented Lucy Gray, CA General Manager. "We really appreciate the effort that went into this year’s entries, which showcased the creativity of our members and as always highlighted the diversity of cruising."

The Log Competition dates back to 1910, when The Love Cup was first awarded. Since then, additional log categories have been added and the competition is one of the CA’s most important events. Trophies are awarded to members for the best log of a cruise carried out in the most recent season, along with a certificate and engraved crystal glass.

Duncan Wells, this year’s judge, enjoyed many hours reviewing the written, video and photographic logs and shared his rationale for selecting the various category winners.

The overall prize of The Hanson Cup, which is awarded for the best log of a cruise of any duration, was won by Bjorn Riis-Johannessen for his ‘Cruise of Many Crews’ on their fresh out of refit cruise in Sweden.

"There was a lot going on and it was fascinating to hear about the skills of the different crews and how they blended together," commented Duncan Wells.

The winners were invited to attend the Hanson Lecture at CA House on Wednesday 30 March 2022, after which the trophies and prizes were presented by yacht designer Rob Humphreys:

Hanson Cup - best log of a cruise - any duration / Bjorn Riis-Johannessen

Love Cup - best log of a cruise of under 30 days' duration / Peter Bell

"The grounding, the rescue, the repair, the escape from Portugal were all salutary news for cruisers," said Wells, on this log from Porto to Vianna, Portugal. "Useful for members who might find themselves in a similar situation."

Dugon Cup - best log of a cruise in a vessel of not more than 32’ LOA – any duration / Alison Cable

"I marvelled as the report of this shakedown cruise which did indeed shake everything apart and shake the gaff and other wooden bits down to deck level. It was a terrific piece of writing of these various disasters," commented Wells on Alison’s account of her trip on ‘Robinetta’, a gaff cutter built in 1937, against a northerly wind from Tollesbury to Southwold.

The Lacey Trophy - best member's website or blog covering cruising in the year / Richard Crooks and Alix Titley

Congratulating the winning log on the journey of buying and cruising in ‘Missy Bear’, Duncan reflected, "Their adventures were well written, I really liked the photos, the detail and the historical information they gave us."

Dolphin Cup - best photographic log / James Kenning

The winning log, ‘A season rescued from Covid chaos’, shared efforts to recover 'Arkyla' from Cherbourg, cross the channel to Portland and onward to the coast of Devon. Wells surmised, "This was a nice record of the various passages and how they juggled house sitter availability with sailing opportunities."
